Proposal for Konstfack Degree Exhibition
We were invited by Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design to create a visual identity proposal for the 2018 degree exhibition, which shows the work of graduating students. Our identity proposal was based on the intuitive and speculative aspects of occult practices and their historical and contemporary connections to arts, crafts and feminism.
The occult is “the knowledge of the hidden”. It's neither rational nor measurable, unlike the natural sciences. As artists and designers we often base our decisions on specific ideas or rationale. But we also tend to rely a lot on intuition, something which can generate ideas much harder to explain or give concrete reasons for. Intuition is “the ability to acquire knowledge without proof, evidence, or conscious reasoning, or without understanding how the knowledge was acquired”. We thought this was an exciting connection between occult practices, such as divination, and artistic intuition.
The crystal ball was used in the identity as a visual metaphor for the exhibition as an opportunity to see and interpret the future of graduating students and the fields in which they work. We were also fascinated by the idea that in a highly reflective crystal ball, we see a wide angle reflection of both ourselves (visitors and students) and the world around us.
